Beautiful Darling
One of the few Warhol superstars to achieve genuine stardom beyond their allotted 15 minutes, Candy Darling was an early trans icon, born James Slattery in Forest Hills, Queens, before reinventing herself as a living artwork in the shape of a classic Hollywood blonde bombshell. James Rasin’s engrossing, sympathetic documentary chronicles Candy’s glamorous but tragically short life story using archive footage and a stellar cast list of interviewees including John Waters, Holly Woodlawn, Fran Lebowitz and Paul Morrissey. Darling’s diary entries are voiced by Chloë Sevigny, with Patton Oswalt standing in for both Warhol and Truman Capote.
